Start from São Luís or Fortaleza?

✈ Fortaleza → São Luís

Start with Jericoacoara (the most popular destination with the best infrastructure) and end at the Lençóis lagoons. Ideal between June and August — the lagoons will be full when you arrive. Fortaleza has more direct international flights (Iberia Madrid, Air France Paris).

✈ São Luís → Fortaleza

Start with the lagoons (the most season-sensitive highlight — depends on sufficient rainfall) and end with Jeri's winds. Best if traveling September through November, prioritizing kitesurfing. Flights to São Luís are usually 10-20% cheaper.

Our suggestion: When in doubt, start from Fortaleza between June and August. The full lagoons are the most fragile highlight — saving them for the finale only works when the season guarantees water.

  • 🌊 Lençóis Maranhenses Lagoons full from June to September. Peak in July (school holidays, more expensive). August is the smart month: full lagoons, fewer crowds.
  • 💨 Jericoacoara (kite) Strong, consistent wind from August to December. Peak September-November. Outside wind season, Jeri still works for non-kiters.
  • 🌀 Parnaíba Delta (optional) If including the Delta, best May through August — wildlife more active, pleasant climate. Outside this window, consider skipping straight to Barreirinhas.
  • 🌦 Avoid January to March: heavy rain in Maranhão, lagoons without water in Lençóis, bad roads between Tutóia and Parnaíba.

Getting started

From Fortaleza (recommended start): Pinto Martins Airport (FOR) with direct flights from all Brazilian capitals, plus Madrid (Iberia) and Paris (Air France). Direct transfer to Jericoacoara: ~4-5h (R$120-250) — multiple daily departures (shared van ~R$230, bus + local transfer ~R$120). Option: overnight in Fortaleza and early departure.

From São Luís (alternative start): Marechal Cunha Machado Airport (SLZ) with flights from São Paulo, Brasília, and Belém. Flights usually 10-20% cheaper. Van to Barreirinhas: ~4h, 5+ daily departures.

Jericoacoara environmental tax: R$41.50/person (valid for 7 days). Paid at the village entrance.

What to pack: SPF 50+ sunscreen, hat, insect repellent, sandals that handle sand and water, light clothing, windbreaker for speedboats and Jeri's winds. Cash is essential — Atins has no ATMs and very few card terminals.

Frequently asked questions

The minimum is 5 days (intense pace, Delta as transit only). The ideal is 7 days, with 2 nights in Jeri and 2 in Barreirinhas. With 10 days, add 3 nights in Jeri, 2 in the Delta, and breathe — it's a different trip.
For 7 days, between R$2,000 (budget) and R$5,500 (premium) per person, not including airfare. The most expensive legs are Jeri→Parnaíba (R$200-350) and Parnaíba→Barreirinhas (R$150-250). Going independently is 20-40% cheaper than tour packages.
Yes, but the pace is intense. You'll have 2 nights in Jeri, 1 in Barreirinhas and 1 in Atins, with the Delta as transit only. Works for those with limited time who prioritize the two main destinations. If possible, 7 days is the sweet spot.
The Route of Emotions is the full corridor (7-14 days, Delta as a required stop, slower pace). This itinerary is the essential version: focuses on Jeri and Lençóis, treats the Delta as optional, and fits in 5-10 days. Same route, different pace.
It's the longest and most adventurous leg. Jeri→Parnaíba (~5-6h by 4x4 + ferry) then Parnaíba→Barreirinhas (~6-7h via Tutóia). Two days of road, ideally with an overnight in Parnaíba to explore the Delta. Ponte can help organize these legs.
