Barreirinhas: Complete Guide [2026]

Barreirinhas is the starting point for everything in Lençóis Maranhenses. From here, 4x4 jeeps head out to Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita, and speedboats run down the Rio Preguiças to Atins and Caburé.

Quick summary: The base town for the Lençóis. A logistics hub with a regional airport, banks, restaurants, and tour agencies. Not the prettiest village in the region — but the most practical.

What Is Barreirinhas

What you'll find:

  • The best tourist infrastructure in the Lençóis Maranhenses region
  • Dozens of local agencies running 4x4 tours to the lagoons and boat trips along the Rio Preguiças
  • Banks, ATMs, pharmacies, supermarkets — everything Atins and Santo Amaro don't have
  • A pleasant riverside promenade with restaurants, ice cream shops, and bars
  • The departure port for Atins (speedboat ~1h30)

What you WON'T find:

  • A beach — Barreirinhas is a riverside town, not a coastal one
  • Lagoons within walking distance — you need a 4x4 (unlike Atins and Santo Amaro)
  • Village charm — it's a small, functional town with traffic and shops
  • Total peace and quiet — peak season gets crowded and busy

When to Go

Period What to Expect
Jul–Dec Full, crystal-clear lagoons. Best time for 4x4 tours in the park. Peak season — more people, higher prices.
Jan–Jun Rainy season. Smaller lagoons, trickier sand roads. Fewer tourists, lower prices.

Tip: The ideal window is July to October — lagoons at their peak, dry weather, and tours run every day without rain cancellations.

How to Get There

The nearest airport is São Luís (SLZ). From there, it's roughly 4h30 on a paved highway to Barreirinhas — the MA-402, known as the "Estrada dos Lençóis." The road is fully paved and well-signposted. The most common options are shared vans (departing from the airport and downtown São Luís, R$80–150/person) or a private transfer. A rental car also works well — the road is good and Barreirinhas has parking.

For those coming from the east (Parnaíba, Delta do Parnaíba, Jericoacoara), the route goes through Tutóia and Paulino Neves. Parts of this stretch are unpaved sand roads and may require a 4x4 during the rainy season. Check with local agencies about conditions before heading out on your own.

What to Do

1. Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita (4x4)

The classic Barreirinhas tour. A 4x4 jeep takes you along sandy trails into the heart of Lençóis Maranhenses. Lagoa Azul is the most famous — turquoise water nestled between white dunes. Lagoa Bonita sits at a higher point, offering panoramic views of the dune fields. Duration: half a day. Departures in the early morning or afternoon. Local agencies operate daily.

2. Rio Preguiças Boat Tour

A speedboat ride down the Rio Preguiças with stops at riverside communities, including Mandacaru (a lighthouse with 360° views of the Lençóis) and Caburé (a sandbar where the river meets the sea). Duration: full day. Lunch is included in most packages. It's the second most popular tour after the lagoons.

3. Caburé

A narrow sandbar between the Rio Preguiças and the Atlantic Ocean. On one side, calm river; on the other, open sea. Accessible only by boat. Great for swimming, lunch, and that impossible photo. It's part of the Rio Preguiças itinerary but deserves its own mention.

4. Farol de Mandacaru

A 160-step climb with a full view of the Lençóis, the river, and the sea. Located in the village of Mandacaru, a mandatory stop on the Rio Preguiças tour. Go in the late afternoon if you can — the light is better.

5. Lagoon Circuit from Santo Amaro

If you have more than one day, it's worth combining Barreirinhas with Santo Amaro do Maranhão (1h by car). From there, the lagoons are accessible on foot — no 4x4 needed. A different and complementary experience.

Where to Eat

Barreirinhas has a solid variety of food options for its size. Most restaurants are clustered along the main avenue (Av. Joaquim Soeiro de Carvalho) and the riverside, near the port. You'll find everything from simple regional dishes — arroz de cuxá, fried fish, shrimp — to more refined options with wine lists.

The riverside is the best spot for dinner: several restaurants with outdoor tables, river views, and an evening breeze. Lunch on tour days is usually included in the package (or you eat at stops along the route). For breakfast, most pousadas include it in the nightly rate.

Practicalities

  • ATM: Yes — Banco do Brasil and Bradesco in the centre. Withdraw cash here before heading to Atins (which has no ATM).
  • Mobile signal: Moderate. Works well in the centre but drops inside the park. Download offline maps before heading out on tours.
  • Wi-Fi: Available at most pousadas and restaurants in the centre.
  • Pharmacy: Yes, a full pharmacy in the centre.
  • Fuel: Petrol stations in the centre — fill up before heading to Santo Amaro.
  • Access: Fully paved road from São Luís (MA-402).

Practical tip: If your plan includes Atins, use Barreirinhas as your logistics base: withdraw cash, buy anything you need, and catch the early boat. The first departures fill up fast in peak season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barreirinhas or Atins — which should I choose?

It depends on what you're after. Barreirinhas is a town with full infrastructure: banks, pharmacies, restaurants, agencies. It's practical as a base. Atins is a small, more charming village with lagoons you can walk to and its own beach — but no ATM and only accessible by boat. Ideally, combine both: use Barreirinhas as a base for 4x4 tours, then take the boat to Atins.

How many days do I need in Barreirinhas?

Two full days are enough for the main tours: one day for Lagoa Azul + Lagoa Bonita (4x4), another for the Rio Preguiças (boat). If you're continuing to Atins, add the crossing on the third day. With more time, include Santo Amaro.

Is there an ATM in Barreirinhas?

Yes. Banco do Brasil and Bradesco in the centre. Withdraw here — Atins, Caburé, and Mandacaru have no ATM.

Do I need an agency to visit the lagoons?

Yes. The lagoons inside the park are only accessible by 4x4 along sand trails — regular cars can't make it. Local agencies run daily departures and prices are generally fixed. You can book directly in town, through your pousada, or via the app.

Is the São Luís–Barreirinhas road good?

Yes. The MA-402 is fully paved, well-maintained, and well-signposted. It's roughly 260 km, about 4h30 without stops. Shared vans make the trip daily.
