Lençóis Maranhenses: The Desert with Water [2026]

Lençóis Maranhenses is a 155,000-hectare expanse of white dunes with freshwater lagoons in Maranhão — the only desert in the world that has water. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2024, the park is accessible from three bases: Barreirinhas, Santo Amaro and Atins.

The phenomenon: From January to April, rains fill the lagoons between the dunes. From May to August they're 100% full under blue skies. From September onward, they dry out gradually.

When to Go

Jun-Aug is the peak: lagoons 100% full, open skies, more tourists. May (and the second half of April) is the insiders' window — lagoons full, fewer people and low-season prices. February-March is honest low season: lagoons still filling, but with few tourists and low prices.

For the complete month-by-month calendar — lagoon levels, crowds and price range — see the guide: When to Go to Lençóis Maranhenses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days are ideal for Lençóis Maranhenses?

A minimum of 2 nights to see the main lagoons. 3-4 nights is ideal to explore at a relaxed pace. If you include Atins, add 2 nights.

Do you need a guide to visit Lençóis?

For 4x4 tours (Barreirinhas, Santo Amaro), yes — a guide is mandatory. For walks on foot to the lagoons (Atins, Santo Amaro), it's not mandatory — you can go on your own.

Can you drive your own car?

Not inside the park — private vehicles are prohibited. You arrive by transfer to the base (Barreirinhas, Santo Amaro or Atins) and use 4x4/boat/walking to access the lagoons.

Is Lençóis Maranhenses worth it in October?

The lagoons start drying out from September onward. In October there are still lagoons, but they're smaller and less impressive. For the full experience, aim for April to August.

What's the difference between Barreirinhas and Atins?

Barreirinhas has full infrastructure (ATM, pharmacy, more accommodation options) and access to the classic lagoons (Azul, Bonita) by 4x4. Atins is a rustic village with exclusive lagoons accessible on foot, excellent gastronomy and flat water for kite.
