The shared van is the standard for anyone arriving by plane. Some companies pick up at Marechal Cunha Machado airport and at hotels — ask before you book. The Road in 2026

• Rain (January to June): potholes on the BR-402 and the MA-320. The worst-hit stretch of the BR-402 in 2026 is after the Santo Amaro junction, towards Barreirinhas — anyone going to Santo Amaro leaves the BR-402 before it.
• Dry season (July to December): the road at its best. For the lagoons, the good window runs to October — from November on they've already dropped.
• Don't drive after dark. No lighting, animals on the road and potholes that only appear at the last second — the people who drive it every day don't drive it at night. There are no tolls. Landed in São Luís at night? The morning van is the plan.

Arriving in Santo Amaro

At the entrance to the village, the tourism fee: R$10 per person, valid for 3 days, in cash. Exempt: residents, people with disabilities, under-12s and over-60s — check on the spot, the rule is municipal. There's no ATM; some guesthouses and the cooperative take Pix or card, but don't count on it.

Santo Amaro and Barreirinhas on the Same Trip

You can combine them: it's ~96km of paved road between the two, 1h30 to 2h. The route runs back along the MA-320 to the junction and on along the BR-402 to Barreirinhas — the stretch with the most patching in 2026. There's no regular tourist service: there's a residents' van before dawn, Monday to Friday, that takes tourists; beyond that it's a private transfer, a chartered car or your own car, priced per car by arrangement.
