Towards the Lençóis or arriving along the coast.
Leave Atins with the Lençóis dunes alongside your ride, or reach the village after following the coast: your starting point changes the experience and the planning.
Drawing on the experience of Rota Insider’s founder, who lives and kitesurfs in Atins.
I am ready to chat ↗Open sea, a stretch of beach and dunes following the coast.
Lagoon: a possible separate stage Explore this departureA starting point nearer Atins for a shorter stretch of coast.
Departure beach to be agreed Explore this departureLeave Arpoador and follow the Pequenos Lençóis coast towards Atins.
Include luggage in your planning Explore this departureIf Atins is already your base, look first at the departure towards the Lençóis. If you want to arrive in the village by kite, compare Arpoador with the shorter Paulino Neves / wind farm option. Mention whether the downwind will be one day of your holiday or a stage of a trip dedicated to kitesurfing.
| Option | Starting point | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Atins → Lençóis coast | Starting from Atins | Where the ride ends and how to return; a lagoon as a separate stage. |
| Paulino Neves / wind farms → Atins | Paulino Neves / wind farm area | The exact departure beach, how to get there and the arrival arrangements. |
| Arpoador → Atins | Arpoador, in the municipality of Tutóia | The full proposed route, luggage and which stages involve kiting or transport. |
The river mouth, sandbars and dune fields help explain what makes these departures different.
Atins is beside the Preguiças river mouth. The Lençóis stretch west; Caburé, the wind farm coast and Arpoador lie to the east.
The landscape opens up: the ride follows the sea, with the beach and dunes inland.
The appeal here is following the coast from Atins: sea, a long stretch of sand and dunes shaping the scenery as you ride. It is a way to explore this side of the region if you are already staying in the village and want to arrange an outing.
Different proposals may use different finishing points. When asking about a “downwind to the Lençóis”, explain whether you want to focus the day on the ocean route or would also like to ride in a lagoon afterwards. That second stage can be part of the conversation, with its own transport and arrangements.
For your planning: agree on the return to your accommodation and, if a lagoon is included, how that stage fits into the rest of the day.
Ask about a departure from AtinsOn the Paulino Neves coast, open beach meets wind turbines on the land behind it. The departure point is agreed with the operator.
You can also ask about a starting point nearer Atins, in the Paulino Neves and wind farm area. This option shortens the route compared with leaving from Arpoador, while keeping the idea of arriving in the village along the coast.
It is an alternative to discuss with the operator if you want this kind of arrival but are looking for a shorter ride. Explain where you will be before the activity: starting in Tutóia, Arpoador or Atins changes the transport that needs to be included in the proposal.
“Departure from the wind farms” is a local reference. Ask for the meeting point and the exact beach so you understand what is being offered. The operator assesses the format against your experience and the expected conditions.
Ask about a shorter routeSandbanks and channels shape the scenery at the Arpoador departure.
Arpoador is a village in Tutóia, between the Delta do Parnaíba and Atins. Along this stretch of coast, open beach, the Pequenos Lençóis dunes and wind turbines share the landscape. A route towards Atins makes arriving in the village part of the ride.
The name “Tutóia–Atins” can appear in itineraries with different starting points. Saying that you want to leave from Arpoador makes your request clearer from the start. If you are staying elsewhere, include transport to the departure point and where your luggage needs to go in the conversation.
Caburé appears in itineraries for this area. Confirm how the operator arranges the arrival in Atins and which stages will be covered by kite or support transport.
Ask about Arpoador → Atins
You do not need to have the route worked out. A specific request already helps: “I will be staying in Atins, I already ride a twin-tip and I want to explore a stretch of coast. I have never done a downwind; I would like to understand the options for my experience.”
If you already do downwinds, explain the types of routes you know and what you are looking for this time. Waves, foiling, guided riding and equipment hire are different interests; mention them, even though the operator will need to confirm what they can offer.
Where does it start, where does it finish and which stages are planned?
Which skills does the operator require for this route?
How does it work during the ride, and on which sections will it be available?
How do riders, equipment and luggage get to the start and back afterwards?
What is included, how much time should you set aside and how do changing conditions affect the arrangements?
To choose your dates, see the kitesurfing season in Atins. During your trip, check wind and tides alongside the operator’s advice.
If your accommodation and excursions are already booked, say which days you are free and where you need to be afterwards. If the downwind is the reason for your trip, make that priority clear before finalising all your transport.
If you want to get started, the Atins kitesurfing guide explains first experiences and lessons. To compare other bases, explore kitesurfing on the Rota das Emoções.
Tell Rota what you have in mind. We help you understand the options and introduce you to an operator. They confirm the route, format, price and conditions for your dates.
Tell us your dates, where you will be staying, your experience and the equipment you use.
This is a separate stage, to be confirmed with the operator.
This guide brings together the experience of Rota Insider’s founder, who lives and kitesurfs in Atins, operator descriptions and official documents. The options help you recognise what you are looking for and start the conversation; the activity provider confirms the proposal.
Editorial research: 9 September 2026. Proposals and conditions should be reconfirmed for your trip.
