Manatee sanctuary. Conservation tourism.
Cajueiro da Praia is home to the world's only open-sea manatee monitoring program — guided traditional sail canoe tours observe 10+ mammals in the estuary without disturbing them (motorized boats prohibited). Just 8 km from Barra Grande, the town also has the Cajueiro Rei: the world's largest cashew tree, with 8,810 m² of canopy from a single trunk.

Manatee tours depart daily — buy tickets in advance from ICMBio, as groups are limited. Mero Hotel Boutique and Villa Castanheiras are the best local accommodations. Combine the visit with Barra Grande (8 km): Cajueiro da Praia is quieter and cheaper, and works well as a base for both destinations.
