How to Get from São Luís to Atins [2026]

Updated on Sep 2026verified by people who live herealso in FRITPT

The short answer

There is no direct route: a van to Barreirinhas (~4h) + a boat along the Rio Preguiças (~1h). The boat leaves at a fixed time — so what decides your day is the time your flight lands.

The question that decides your day

Season

Your arrival planOutbound · São Luís → Atins

You can make it today: the 12:30pm boat, and you sleep in Atins tonight.

Can You Get There the Same Day? It Depends on Your Flight

The boat times don't depend on the tide — they're fixed. What changes is the season. And the maths starts at the airport: 45 minutes between landing and the van is enough. The airport vans work around flight arrivals and, if you tell them, they'll wait about 15 minutes. After that it's ~4h on the road to Barreirinhas (up to 4h30 with the pickups and the stop).

Flights into São Luís arrive in waves, and each wave catches a different van:

Your flight lands… The van that works Barreirinhas And then
In the small hours (the fullest wave of the day) 7am — or the 4am one, if you're already up ~11am The 12:30pm boat, year-round
Early morning (~7:30am) a mid-morning one (another company's) ~12:15pm The 4pm boat in high season; outside it, a night in Barreirinhas
Mid-morning or midday (~10:45am onwards) 2pm ~6pm A night in Barreirinhas, the 12:30pm boat the next day
Late afternoon (~4pm) 5pm ~9pm A night in Barreirinhas
Late evening (~11:45pm) none today A night in São Luís and the first van, 4am or 7am

From 26 October 2026 there is a direct flight from Lisbon, twice a week, landing just after midnight — right inside that small-hours wave, so you can fly in from Europe and reach Atins the same day on the 12:30pm boat.

Landed at 3pm? The 5pm van still takes you: you reach Barreirinhas around 9pm, sleep there and take the 12:30pm boat the next day. Sleeping in São Luís is only worth it if you land at night. A private boat leaves at any time of day, and for a group it's sometimes worth it — but nobody sails the Preguiças after dark. If your flight lands in the afternoon, the night in Barreirinhas isn't a delay, it's the plan.

The grid above (4am, 7am, 2pm, 5pm) is a reference: every company has its own timetable, and between 7am and 11am departures are close to continuous. Confirm the day before.

Understand the journey

Quick summary: there is no direct route from São Luís to Atins. It comes in three parts: a van from São Luís to Barreirinhas (~4h, R$80-150/person*), the connection in Barreirinhas, and the boat along the Rio Preguiças to Atins (~1h, R$70-150/person*). Counting the wait at the port, that's 5h30 to 6h30 door to door. The boat leaves at a fixed time — 12:30pm year-round, and 4pm in high season too — so the question that decides your day isn't "how", it's "what time does your flight land".

We live in Atins and make this trip all the time.

The Route in Three Parts

Part How Time Price per person*
1. São Luís → Barreirinhas Shared van on the BR-402 (formerly MA-402, the "Estrada dos Lençóis") ~4h (up to 4h30 with the pickups and the stop) R$80-150
2. The connection From where the van drops you to the port on Avenida Beira Rio 30min to 1h30 of waiting, depending on the time
3. Barreirinhas → Atins Speedboat along the Rio Preguiças ~1h R$70-150

Distance: ~255km of road and ~38km of river. The river leg has its own guide.

*Reference prices as of September 2026; they vary with season and how far in advance you book.

Part 1: São Luís → Barreirinhas

The shared van is the standard. It picks up at Marechal Cunha Machado airport and at hotels in the city, and runs several times a day — from before dawn to late afternoon. The timetable varies by company — the one we print here is a reference: confirm the day before, or send us your flight and we'll tell you which van connects with the boat.

The rule that decides everything: count 45 minutes between landing and the van — they organise themselves around arrivals and will wait about 15 minutes if you ask. What they won't do is hold for a delayed flight, and pickup times are approximate (reports from 2024 and 2025 range from an hour early to an hour late). Buses, private transfers, rental cars, luggage and the state of the BR-402 in 2026 are all in the São Luís → Barreirinhas guide.

The Connection in Barreirinhas: Where the Trip Goes Wrong

The crossing itself is smooth. The handover between the van and the boat isn't. This is where we see the problems:

  • The van drops you in the centre or at your hotel, not at the port. Boarding is on Avenida Beira Rio, opposite the O Bambu restaurant — a few minutes on foot or by moto-taxi.
  • Nobody holds the boat. The 12:30pm speedboat leaves at 12:30pm. If the van runs late, the boat won't wait — and there's a 2026 report of a driver trying to "make up time" on the road.
  • A poorly coordinated booking = an unplanned night in Barreirinhas. There are also 2026 reports of a boat paid for at 12:30pm that became "only at 4pm" on the day, and of an operator who simply didn't show up.

What fixes it: buy the van with the boat in mind, not the other way round. If you reach Barreirinhas around 11am, you have margin for the 12:30pm. If you get in at midday, you don't. In high season, book the boat 2 or 3 days ahead — the seats run out.

Missed the last boat? The standard move is to sleep in Barreirinhas and leave on the first boat the next morning. A cheap alternative for the morning: the jardineira, the 4×4 truck through the park (~2h, leaves early in the morning — confirm the day before). For a group, a private boat the same day can still be worth it.

Part 2: Barreirinhas → Atins and Arriving

Departures from Barreirinhas: 12:30pm year-round, and 4pm in high season (~Jun–Sep); the return from Atins is at 7am and 2pm. Private boats at any time of day. On Saturdays one of the companies doesn't sail — confirm the day. Prices, the morning scenic tour boat and the overland alternative are in the Barreirinhas → Atins guide.

The boat docks at Porto de Fora, on the riverbank. The guesthouses are a few minutes away on foot or by quad-taxi (~R$10-20*) — in Atins there are only quad bikes, and there's no bank: bring cash.

Choose how to book

Three Ways to Buy the Trip

Way How it works Cost per person* Who holds the connection
Each leg separately You book the van and the boat with different companies R$150-300 Nobody — the risk is yours
Private door to door A single operator: car from the hotel to the port, boat with no stops, quad bike to the guesthouse From ~R$2,500 for a group of up to 3 people* The operator
Through your guesthouse or through us Someone who lives in Atins fits the same two legs together and keeps an eye on the day The price of the legs Whoever put it together

The first is the cheapest and the one that goes wrong most often. The second removes the risk, at a price that only makes sense for families and groups.

Organize the return

The Return: Atins → São Luís with a Flight Booked

The calculation we run with every guest:

The 7am boat → Barreirinhas around 8am → van around 9am → São Luís around 1pm. That leaves comfortable margin for flights from 4pm, allowing for a hold-up on the road.

Flight before 4pm? Sleep the night before in Barreirinhas: the first van of the morning usually reaches São Luís around midday — confirm the time, every company has its own timetable. And if the flight is early in the morning, the only honest answer is the night before in São Luís.

Kite gear

Travelling with Kite Gear

September is the peak of the wind in Atins, in a season that runs from July to December (June and January are uncertain, with weak wind) — and it's when most people turn up with a board.

  • On the van: say so when you book, 48h in advance. Some companies charge ~R$150* for the board bag; kite, bar and harness count as ordinary luggage.
  • On the boat: say so when you book too.
  • Carrying nothing: Atins has schools with gear rental. For a week, plenty of people prefer it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get from São Luís to Atins?

5h30 to 6h30 door to door: ~4h by van to Barreirinhas, the wait at the port and ~1h by boat. The real time depends on which boat you catch — 12:30pm year-round, 4pm in high season.

Can you reach Atins the same day as your flight?

With a small-hours flight, yes: the 7am van reaches Barreirinhas around 11am and you take the 12:30pm boat. Landing by about 10am in high season also works — a mid-morning van catches the 4pm boat. Later than that, no: the night is in Barreirinhas and the 12:30pm boat leaves the next day.

How much does it cost to get from São Luís to Atins?

Leg by leg, R$150-300 per person (van R$80-150 + boat R$70-150). A private door to door starts at ~R$2,500 for a group of up to 3 people.*

Does the boat to Atins depend on the tide?

No. The times are fixed. The tide only matters if you come in from the other side, by 4×4 along the beach from Caburé or Tutóia — a leg of the Rota das Emoções circuit, not an alternative for anyone flying into São Luís.

And on the way back, which boat should I take for my flight?

The 7am one. It reaches Barreirinhas ~8am, van ~9am, São Luís ~1pm — good for flights from 4pm. Anything earlier, sleep the night before in Barreirinhas or São Luís.
