The Road in 2026

The worst-hit stretch is between the Santo Amaro junction and Barreirinhas — the last hour of the trip. In May 2026 there was a protest over the potholes and DNIT carried out repairs that were still under way. Expect patches, not a new road.
Rain (January to June) opens potholes; the dry season (July to December) is the road at its best.
Don't drive at night. No lighting, cattle on the road and potholes that only appear at the last second — the drivers themselves avoid it. Got into São Luís late? Sleep there and leave early.
No tolls. A stop halfway for the toilet and a snack is standard on the vans.

Arriving in Barreirinhas: Stay or Carry On?

The van drops you in the centre or at your hotel door. Barreirinhas has a bank, a pharmacy, a supermarket and mobile signal — it's the last "complete" town before the Lençóis. Take cash out here: Atins has no bank.
