The Van from São Luís to Barreirinhas: How It Actually Works

Where it picks you up: at arrivals in Marechal Cunha Machado, or at your hotel door. The driver calls or messages shortly before.
When it leaves: several times a day, from before dawn to late afternoon. The timetable varies by company and goes stale fast. Confirm the day before.
Flight delayed? Your seat belongs to the time you booked, and there's generally no refund. 45 minutes between landing and the van is the minimum, not a guarantee, and it only works with the van booked for your flight; if you tell them, they'll wait about 15 minutes, not more.
The time is approximate. Reports from 2024 and 2025 describe vans arriving an hour before the agreed time and vans turning up an hour late. Be ready early, with your phone on.
Last-minute cancellations happen. There are reports from 2025 and 2026 of bookings canceled the day before for lack of space. Confirm the day before and have a plan B.

The Bus from São Luís to Barreirinhas: Which One Works After Your Flight

The bus leaves from the São Luís bus station, not the airport, and it doesn't wait for your flight: miss the departure and you lose the ticket. Departures advertised for October 2026:

Luggage: in the hold, the bigger company on the route takes up to 30kg per person and no item longer than 1 meter. Boards: ask the company before you buy; if they won't carry yours, take the van.
Where it drops you: at Posto Leal (a gas station). The boarding point for the boats to Atins is about 500m away, on Avenida Beira Rio, opposite the O Bambu restaurant: about 10 minutes on foot, by day. The ~2pm bus gets in after dark, and the evening ones between ~10:45pm and ~1:30am: arrange the ride from the stop with your guesthouse beforehand.

The Road in 2026

The worst-hit stretch is between the Santo Amaro junction and Barreirinhas — the last hour of the trip. In May 2026 there was a protest over the potholes and DNIT carried out repairs that were still under way. Expect patches, not a new road.
Rain (January to June) opens potholes; the dry season (July to December) is the road at its best.
Don't drive at night. No lighting, cattle on the road and potholes that only appear at the last second — the drivers themselves avoid it. Got into São Luís late? Sleep there and leave early.
No tolls. A stop halfway for the toilet and a snack is standard on the vans.

Arriving in Barreirinhas: Stay or Carry On?

The van drops you in the center or at your hotel door; the bus, at Posto Leal, ~500m from the river. Barreirinhas has a bank, a pharmacy, a supermarket and mobile signal — it's the last "complete" town before the Lençóis. Take cash out here: Atins has no bank.

Carrying on to Atins means the boat along the Rio Preguiças, ~1h, with advertised departures around noon–12:30pm and, in some cases, 4pm, to be confirmed for your date. Confirm whether the van’s or the bus’s arrival allows time for the connection: the morning bus cuts it close for the midday boat. The vans back also run several times a day — early morning, mid-morning and late afternoon — and drop you at your hotel or at the airport, depending on your booking. Count on ~4h on the road + 2h of margin before boarding:
