Three days is the efficiency ceiling — one night in Barreirinhas, one in Atins, third-day return to São Luís. Transfers run proportionally high (the van + speedboat cost the same whether you do 3 or 7 days), but the gesture is deliberate: you came for the lagoons.
R$/DAYR$380 · R$500 · R$580
Estimated values for 2026. Does not include airfare. Express itinerary — 3 intense days, ideal for adding Lençóis to another trip.
Five days is the balance — two nights in Barreirinhas (Lagoa Azul + Lagoa Bonita without rush), one in Atins, time for the Preguiças river trip. Comfortable-tier lodging leads, transfers fall to ~18% of total — the best value point.
R$/DAYR$360 · R$440 · R$490
Estimated values for 2026. Does not include airfare. The sweet spot: enough time for lagoons, river, and Atins without rushing.
Seven days is the Santo Amaro upper bound — remote, emptier lagoons enter the trip, Atins earns a double-night, the Preguiças is enjoyed slowly. Per-day cost drops below R$430 in the Comfortable tier — the most relaxed Lençóis trip on offer.
R$/DAYR$370 · R$443 · R$480
Estimated values for 2026. Does not include airfare. With 7 days, you reach remote lagoons (Santo Amaro), sleep extra in Atins, and do the river trip at leisure.
Start from São Luís or Fortaleza?
🔄 SLZ → Atins → Barreirinhas → SLZ
Start remote and end at the busier hub. Problem: reaching Atins on day one is more complex (São Luís→Barreirinhas→speedboat→Atins, ~6h with connection). Not recommended unless you arrive in São Luís early morning.
Our suggestion:Always go SLZ→Barreirinhas→Atins. The logistics are simpler and the experience builds from organized to wild — the best possible ending.
Recommended
🔄 SLZ → Barreirinhas → Atins → SLZ
Standard and recommended order. Start with the organized lagoon tours in Barreirinhas (full tourist infrastructure) and end relaxing in Atins (wild village, slow pace). Day-one logistics are simple: van from São Luís straight to Barreirinhas.

🌊 Lençóis Lagoons — Lagoons full from June to September — peak in July, best value in August. Lagoons start filling in May and dry out from October onward.
☀️ Best month — August. Full lagoons, reliable sunshine, fewer tourists than July (school holidays). Pleasant temperatures, ideal for dune hikes.
🌦 Avoid — January to March: heavy rain, empty lagoons, flooded trails. November to December: lagoons nearly dry, intense heat, less impressive landscape.
Getting started
From São Luís: Marechal Cunha Machado Airport (SLZ) with direct flights from São Paulo (GRU/CGH), Brasília, and Belém. Airport to city center: taxi ~R$40. Van to Barreirinhas: ~4h, 5+ daily departures from 6am (R$75-100).
Express tip: For the 3-day itinerary, take the 6am bus or 7am van on day one — arrival in Barreirinhas around 10-11am, time for the lagoon tour in the afternoon.
What to pack: SPF 50+ sunscreen, hat, insect repellent, sandals that handle sand and water, light clothing, flashlight (Atins has no street lighting). Cash is essential — Atins has no ATMs and very few card terminals.

Our assistant books available legs and quotes the rest with local partners.
3 days is the absolute minimum (1 night in Barreirinhas, 1 in Atins — sprint pace). 5 days is ideal: time for Lagoa Azul and Bonita, river trip to Caburé, and at least one full night in Atins. With 7 days, add remote lagoons (Santo Amaro), extra night in Atins, and return without rushing.
Fast speedboat on the Preguiças River, ~1h30, R$120/person. Departs 9am from Barreirinhas dock — arrive 30min early. The trip is a tour in itself: banks lined with buriti palms, Mandacaru Lighthouse along the way, and the river mouth at Caburé. Bookable via Ponte.
Absolutely. Barreirinhas is the organized gateway — excellent lagoon tours, tourist infrastructure. Atins is the other extreme: fishing village, sand streets, no cars, no asphalt. They're complementary experiences. Skipping Atins means missing half of Lençóis.
June through September. The January-May rains fill the lagoons between the dunes. July is peak (school holidays, more expensive). August is the smart month: lagoons still full, reliable sunshine, fewer tourists. From October the lagoons start drying — by November they're no longer worth visiting.
Yes — and we recommend it. From Atins, you can continue to Tutóia and then Parnaíba, connecting to Jericoacoara via 4x4. This expanded itinerary is exactly our "Jericoacoara to Lençóis Maranhenses" itinerary (5-10 days). Check the full route.
For whomFor travelers with limited time who want to focus on what matters: lagoons between white dunes, a lazy river to the sea, and a fishing village frozen in time.
