Count the days from São Luís: The 3-day version assumes you are ready to leave early on day one. The 5- and 7-day versions include an initial night in São Luís. Flying in may require time outside the itinerary's days.

Coordinate road and river: See São Luís to Barreirinhas and Barreirinhas to Atins. Choose between a direct boat transfer and a Preguiças River excursion around the time available; confirm which service reaches your agreed destination.

Keep the final day for the return: Every version returns to São Luís. Confirm departure from Atins, the connection in Barreirinhas and arrival before choosing your flight. An approximate journey time does not guarantee a flight connection.

Prepare for your stay: Ask your accommodation about arrival arrangements, accepted payment methods and what to bring for your chosen excursions. A one-night Atins stay needs particular attention to arrival and departure times.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need for Lençóis Maranhenses?

This guide offers 3, 5 or 7 days between São Luís, Barreirinhas and Atins, including the return. The 3-day version allows one night in each Lençóis base and requires an early departure from São Luís on day one. The 5-day version includes one night in São Luís, two in Barreirinhas and one in Atins; the 7-day version increases Barreirinhas to three nights and Atins to two. Santo Amaro is not part of these versions.

What's the Barreirinhas to Atins transfer like?

Direct transport and the Preguiças River excursion are different services. A 9am departure reference generally describes the excursion; do not use it as a guarantee for the direct boat. Check the leg's section and confirm operator, time, fare, baggage and arrival point for your date before planning the day in Atins.

Is it worth including Atins in the itinerary?

Choosing both bases combines excursions from Barreirinhas with an Atins village stay near the Preguiças River mouth. The tradeoff is base-change time, especially in three days. If you prefer fewer journeys, compare a single-base stay; that needs a different excursion and return plan, rather than simply deleting the Atins night.

When are the Lençóis lagoons full?

June to September is a planning reference for visiting the lagoons, but water levels depend on rainfall and vary between circuits and years. Check conditions close to your trip. Outside that window, ask which excursions make sense; the calendar cannot promise every lagoon will be full or establish that a visit is no longer worthwhile.
