1. Jericoacoara → Jijoca

The jardineira (a 4×4 truck) across the dunes, 40 minutes to an hour, R$40 with the cooperative and up to ~R$65 through the operator* — and this leg has no alternative: there is no road into the village of Jeri. With or without a direct transfer, you start on the back of a 4×4 truck in the sand.

It is run by Cooperjeri, Jijoca's official cooperative. If you book the jardineira just for your group, the whole vehicle goes for R$100-150* (4 to 10 people). Leaving your car in Jijoca? The cooperative's own parking is open 24h and costs ~R$15 a day*; the other car parks in Jijoca charge more.

The 10:30-11am departure is the one that connects with the direct transfers. For the bus chain, ask your guesthouse for the first jardineira of the morning — Rota Combo advertises departures every 90 minutes from 8am (the operator's timetable, not the cooperative's). Confirm the day before, and settle the pickup point inside the village with them then, because it varies.

2. Jijoca → Camocim

Expresso Guanabara bus, about 1h to 1h20, R$18-35 per person*, with tickets on ClickBus or at the counter. It's the leg we know least about.

The timetables we have confirmed are for the reverse direction (Camocim → Jijoca: 7am, 11:30am, 2pm and 4pm). In your direction the timetable is thinner: one departure in the middle of the day and another late in the evening. And the connection between the jardineira and the midday bus is tight — nobody can guarantee it: miss it and the next one is the evening bus. Confirm the day before; times change from company to company.

The alternative is to skip the bus out of Jijoca with a Jeri → Camocim transfer: ~96km of paved road from Jijoca, 1h50 to 2h, an ordinary car — the jardineira to Jijoca is part of the trip; check whether it is in the price. It comes to R$1,215* private (up to 4) or R$1,385* (up to 6) — that is the Camocim → Jeri price; confirm it. We have a record of a shared service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, but it does not appear on the operator's page today — ask before you count on it.

Sleeping in Camocim? The town centre is not Praia do Maceió, the touristy side, where the kite scene is — that is another 15 minutes by buggy.

3. Camocim → Parnaíba

Guanabara bus on the BR-402, ~116km, 1h50 to 2h30, R$28-48 per person*, with several departures a day — buy on ClickBus. In Camocim, boarding is at the Terminal José Maria Veras. It is the best-served leg of the chain and the only one with prices checked in this direction.

This is where you leave Ceará and enter Piauí. Parnaíba is the junction of the Rota das Emoções. By van, Rota Combo charges R$180 per person* for the shared service (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, around 11am-midday); a private hire is R$550* (up to 3) or R$645* (up to 5), on 0800 717 7701.

4. Parnaíba → Tutóia

Bus from the Parnaíba bus station, ~121km of paved road, about 2h, R$30-40 per person*. An ordinary road: it does not depend on the tide and does not call for a 4×4.

An honest warning: the times and prices we have checked are for the reverse direction, Tutóia → Parnaíba. In the Parnaíba → Tutóia direction there are buses all day, but the timetable changes from company to company and from season to season — confirm at the bus station the day before, not on the day.

By van, Rota Combo charges R$94 per person* (Tuesdays and Thursdays, in the reverse direction — confirm yours); a private hire starts at R$605* for up to 3 people. Some people swap the road for the speedboat crossing through the Delta, 4 to 6 hours with the sightseeing — the departure we know is the 2pm from the Porto de Tutóia, that is, in the return direction; check how it works in yours.

5. Tutóia → Barreirinhas

Bus on the MA-315, via Paulino Neves, about 2h, R$20-33 per person*: the last leg and one of the prettiest. The MA-315 is the first eco-highway in Maranhão, opened in 2019 — from Tutóia it is ~29km to Paulino Neves and another ~38km to Barreirinhas.

The line is run by Cisne Branco, which sells through QueroPassagem or at the Tutóia terminal, on Av. Paulino Neves, 703; today's timetable has about eight departures a day, from before dawn to late evening, with other companies running the same leg.

The same warning as the leg before: the price and the eight departures come from a September 2026 search, not from an official timetable — confirm at the Tutóia terminal the day before. Getting into Barreirinhas late by bus is no problem; what you won't find is a 4×4 tour to the lagoons after sunset.

The Direct Transfer: One Day, One Ticket

It is the choice for anyone who doesn't want to look after the connections: someone does it for you. The route is different too: instead of the paved road through Camocim, it runs along the coast, via Barra Grande, Parnaíba, Tutóia and Caburé.

Two rules of the shared service that ruin the trip when nobody mentions them:

Board or kite board bag: +R$150, with 48h notice.* It can't be sorted out on the day you board.
Luggage: one item, 55×35×25cm. A big suitcase means the private transfer or Gi Conect.

And the rule that governs everything: in this direction, the one-day shared service runs on Saturdays. If you're leaving Jeri on a Tuesday, what's left is Gi Conect, the private transfer and the bus chain.

Can You Do It in One Day?

On the direct transfer, yes — that is exactly what it sells: ~7h to 7h30 from Jeri to Barreirinhas, leaving the village mid-morning and getting in late in the afternoon.

On the bus chain, the honest answer is "probably not". Leaving Jeri on the first jardineira and with everything connecting, you would reach Barreirinhas in the evening — except that it is a set of connections we have never tested on the road and that nobody guarantees: no terminal holds a bus because the one before it was late. The five legs already come to 7h30 to 8h30 of road alone before any waiting at all. People who do the chain sleep on the way, and Parnaíba is the most logical stop: it is the town with more bus lines.

Arriving in Barreirinhas: Stay or Carry On?

Barreirinhas is the gateway to the Lençóis and the last "complete" town in the region: bank, pharmacy, supermarket, mobile signal. Take cash out here — Atins has no bank.

Staying in Barreirinhas is the standard for anyone who has come for the lagoons: the 4×4s to Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita leave from here, with more choice and lower prices than at the other bases (Barreirinhas guide).
Carrying on to Atins means the boat along the Rio Preguiças, ~38km, about 1h, R$70-150 per person*, with a fixed departure at 12:30pm year-round and 4pm in high season. On Saturdays one of the companies doesn't sail; the other does (guide to that leg).
